“Introduction to Social Research” Response

Please utilize one research you have done in the past. Share in your journal:

Which approach among the five that you have done in your past research?

-The approach that I have done in my past research is Arts-based. In my Arts of West and Central Africa class, I examined the Fulani strip weaving tradition as a regional practice, with its localized conventions, processes, and history, and applied them to creating a contemporary piece inspired by Fulani strip weaving.

What genrewould you utilize to categorize this research?

-The genre I would use to categorize this research is a combination of unobtrusive methods and visual arts practices. I looked at many different sources to make conclusions about conventions, meanings, and history, and them applied them to my own tactile experience of weaving.

What paradigmand theory/theoretical school you applied as the perspective to analyze this research?

-The paradigm and theory/theoretical school I applied as the perspective to analyze this research was arts based or aesthetic intersubjective. The theory/theoretical school combines embodiment and ethnomethodology. I examined history, significance, and meanings, and processes of Fulani strip weaving, especially in the way it fit into West African culture, and in response made a strip weaving depicting my own contemporary experiences.

What method did you apply to conduct the research?

-The methods I applied to conduct the research are content analysis, document analysis, and visual analysis, as well as weaving. I looked at many books that discussed Fulani strip weavings, examined the descriptions and images of weavings, and then used that information to make a weaving myself. I used a modern floor loom, and thought about how I could symbolically represent my experiences through color and shape.

After reviewing your previous research, please think about and briefly state which approach and method you will want to experiment to integrate visual study with your secondary field? Why? What knowledge or understanding can they help you gain/investigate?

-I think I will want to use the Arts-based research (ABR) approach. I want to examine the way that a visual art piece and a poem can work together to evoke, provoke, or unsettle in regards to depictions of Islamic art and Middle Eastern Culture, perhaps focusing on the war in Syria. This would combine the genres of literary practices and visual arts practices, and be a part of the arts-based/aesthetic intersubjective paradigm. The theoretical school would be embodiment. The methods would combine experimental writing and either painting, drawing, weaving, or ceramics (or a combination of them). Looking at my second field of English/creative writing, I would want to examine how these different forms of expression can work together to impact the audience, to evoke, so that they have a greater understanding of the tragedy of the war in Syria.
