“Arts-Based Duoethnography” Readings Response

What is duoethnography? How will you define arts-based/visual duoethnography?

-Duoethnography is a research method that involves a dialogue exchange between two or more researchers on different perspectives a specific topic. Meanwhile, artsbased/visual douethnography also utilizes art making as a way of metaphorically representing learned topics, experiences, etc in an exchange between researchers. This can help frame the intersections between thoughts and give a visual, interpretive representation of ideas that spur thought and new perspectives, which can be interpreted in different ways by the viewer, so that they connect their own experiences to it as well.

How do you think about utilizing arts-based letter/journal as a means to exchange research thoughts?

-I think that the letter/journal is a very effective way of continuing an ongoing conversation between two researchers. It allows one to interpret, react, and respond, so that one person’s perspectives can cause the other person to branch out into new ideas/perspectives The learning exchange is unique in this instance, because it is personalized, and it can cause one to change their views and find connections with others in ways that expand their understanding. Something the other says can make you think of something you wouldn’t have thought of had you conducted the research by yourself.

Have you ever been challenged to your "edge of understanding/knowing/learning" and come up with a solution that you never thought about before? What was the feeling about it? Please briefly describe the experience. If you haven't had the experience, please shortly state how do you perceive the idea of "edge of understanding/knowing/learning" from the article and how can it help people transform their existing assumptions.

-The “edge of understanding/knowing/learning” is the moment in which you realize a possibility you did not previously consider. I can’t think of a moment, personally, but I’m sure I have had them without realizing. If you are reactive to the things happening/the things other people do around you, you might think of a solution which you had never thought of before. When you push yourself to try something outside of your comfort zone, you may discover a new approach to things that had never occurred to you previously. If someone is not interested in something, you can develop a discussion with them where they share their interests. You can then take that information and come up with a new way to spark their interest.

Please list TWO questions that you want to know more about the article and state the reason why. Ask us in class. Hsui will be here!

1. How did art making enrich the exchange between two researchers in ways that wouldn’t have been accomplished had art making not been utilized?

2. What were the connections you thought of only because you had another person to help you think of new ideas?
