“Arts Based Research Practice: Merging Social Research and the Creative Arts” Reading Response

· Please reference the TABLE 20.1 (page 6 of 40)  and think about which type of arts-based research you will be interested to discover.

I think I will be interested in simply the Arts-Based Research (ABR), because it can be used to examine the way that visual and textual art can work together to give the reader/viewer an empathetic experience. Honestly, this chart confused me, I wasn’t sure what the difference between all of these terms were, and which one best applied to my interests. The only one I feel like I could apply to my research/art making is the Arts-Based Research.

· There are four aspects of strength that Leavy mentions from p. 8-10. Have you ever felt one of them when you conducted arts research/project in the past? What did you feel at that time?

In high school, I had some creative writing assignments in which I chose to write about my religion and culture, and in reading those aloud to my classmates, I was struck by the way that they remembered what I said, it stuck with them, because it was presented in an empathy-inducing way. They felt more moved by what I had to say through the personal narratives I wrote than they would have had they read an informational article. I wrote a piece about what it was like when I first started wearing my headscarf, and years later I had a classmate tell me that she remembered it, and she was moved by it. It was something she hadn’t understood before, but after I read my personal narrative to the class, she understood on an almost experiential level, what it meant and how it felt to begin wearing it.

· There are different approaches under various genres that Leavy categorizes for arts-based research. Which approach interests you the most and you may want to explore and experiment it for your final project.

The approaches that interest me the most are the Poetic Inquiry/Fiction as Research Practice combined with Visual Genres of either ceramic, fibers, painting, or drawing. I think it would be interesting to see how a story can be told by combining both genres, and doing so to create empathy in the viewer. I would focus on the tragedies in Syria, and through a poem or fictional short story, I would want to give narrative to an art piece. I think it would be interesting to have this type of directed viewing experience, where the subject of the art piece is expanded and given context.

Please list THREE questions that you have about arts-based research after you read the reading. Post them on your blog and we will discuss them in class.

Question 1: Is there a way that Arts-Based Research can work in a quantitative sense?

Question 2: What is it about arts-based research that gives it the empathetic quality for audiences?

Question 3: Is there another research field which arts-based research would not work well with? The reading claimed that it works with any interdisciplinary approach.
